Vestiges: tras el fuego. 2026. Recorded performance, site specific performance and installation.
‘Vestiges: tras el fuego’, a site-specific live performance and installation was presented in Pena-roja de Tastavins, as part of the first Reviscolar Jornada, held at the Santuari de la Mare de Déu de la Font in the Matarranya.
Reviscolar connects cultural initiatives across Terres de l’Ebre, Teruel and Castellón, creating new networks for rural cooperation. It was a real privilege to share the work with representatives from the Spanish Ministry of Culture and with so many people working to strengthen culture, creativity and connection across rural territories.
The connection with this particular site was the starting point for the performance. The surrounding area suffered a devastating forest fire in July this year, and the burnt landscape became both the backdrop and a material presence within the work.
Charcoal, ash and burnt branches from the fire entered into the performance alongside white fabric, creating a space for incidental drawing – marks made through movement, footsteps, imperfections and traces left by the body.
The soundscape brought together fire, water and birdsong with a spoken-word text created specifically for this performance. Four languages – English, Spanish, Catalan and Welsh – moved through the work, with the repeated words ‘That was the summer in which I died…’ becoming a call to action.
A call for collaboration.
A call for change.
A call to listen, to care, to act.
Through live performance, the work moves through emotions of sadness, loss, grief and despair, but also towards connection and the possibility of something different – towards hope for the future.
