Art lovers in Southampton have got their first glimpse of how the city’s Medieval Bargate will look as a new contemporary art gallery. The ancient building – now known as “The Bargate Monument Gallery” has undergone a £70,000 makeover which has transformed it into a centre for local artists and is due to open to the public next Wednesday. Southampton born artist, Sarah Misselbrook, is the first person to stage an exhibition at the new gallery with her show entitled “Affirmation”.
She let viewers in for a sneak preview of the show before it opens to the general public next week. The revamp of the Bargate, which has taken four months to complete, has been paid for with cash from the city council and SEEDA, the South East of England Development Agency.
