1m2, 2001. Plaster, steel.
A full size cast directly from the artist’s body in foetal position. This work was produced in direct response to a ‘call for applications’. The limitations on the artwork for consideration included the stipulation that it should not exceed one metre in any direction. Taking this literally the artist constrains her body into a 1m2 marked on the floor, whilst in position the body is cast. This mould is filled with plaster and the spinal steel restraints are added in retrospect. The work was denied access to the call for proposals as it was deemed to heavy for handling. Since the work was originally rejected, the Southampton City Art Gallery invited the artist to show this piece for a 6 week period alongside the permanent collection.
